The Future State of Agriculture: Fred Yoder, An Advocate of Agriculture

In the early planning stages of our event, we sat down and thought carefully about the theme and who exactly we would want to bring in to speak. After a lot of thought, we settled on the theme of ‘The Future State of Agriculture’. We felt that after the election, there were a lot of unanswered questions about where agriculture was heading and we felt that we needed to find a way to learn more about the future. After deciding on our topic, deciding who we should have come and speak was a no brainer. If there is anyone in Ohio agriculture with the knowledge and experiences to help answer these questions, it would be Fred Yoder.

Fred Yoder is a fourth generation farmer from Plain City, Ohio where he farms corn and soybeans with his wife Debbie. He also owns and operates his own retail farm seed business. Fred Yoder has become an advocate for not only Ohio’s agriculture industry but the United States as well. Yoder served as President of the National Corn Growers Association and represented over 300,000 corn growers in the United States. He has also invested many years of service to Ohio’s Corn and Wheat Associations. He was chair of the National Corn Growers Association’s Biotech Working Group. This group worked heavily to utilize emerging technology so it could be used safely on the farm.

Yoder has also been an advocate on the international level and has travelled to the European Union to discuss co-existence of production systems, increasing corn demand, pending climate policy and conservation and sustainability concerns. In 2013, Yoder was honored by President Barack Obama as a Champion of Change for his work in agriculture. This award honors ordinary Americans who do extraordinary things.

In October of 2016, Yoder was again tapped to serve the United States but in a different capacity. Yoder is now serving as a member of President Trump’s Agriculture Advisory Committee. Yoder and his colleagues will help shape the new administration’s agriculture policies. This will mean helping shape and create policies pertaining to the current Farm Bill, food safety procedures, failing commodity prices, agriculture regulation and other important issues facing America’s agriculture.

“My passion is how we feed the hungry world by 2050. The thing I keep thinking about is that we have to do it on the same land mass, but do it better, so how do we keep making it better than it was before, but at the same time have high productivity and also provide some ecosystem services to the rest of the world that are valuable to them too.” –Fred Yoder

At our seminar, Yoder will be addressing the perspective from our federal government. He will be able to share his experiences from his positions serving Ohio and the America’s agriculture to help form policies affecting our industry. We are incredibly excited to hear from Fred Yoder as well as Adam Sharp, Ken Davis, David T. Daniels, Tara Durbin and John Mayer. We hope that you will join us at this FREE event and hear from our speakers and the unique perspectives they have to offer!
