Mt Orab Fire Department Teaches PH&A Staff CPR and First Aid Basics
According to the American Heart Association, CPR – or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest. (https://cpr.heart.org/en/resources/cpr-facts-and-stats).
CPR is a vital tool, but it's not only for emergency medical response teams. At our October meeting, staff members were given the opportunity to learn about and practice the basics of CPR and first aid. Tyler Spitznagel and Tyler Newberry, from the Mt. Orab Fire Department, spent time teaching us what CPR is, tips on how to perform effective CPR, and the differences in technique for various ages, including infants. We were given the opportunity to practice CPR and how to use an AED on the provided manikins. Spitznagel and Newberry also reviewed the basics of using Narcan, an Epipen, and a tourniquet.
Our employee wellness program is designed to help our staff be the best versions of themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. This mini-training session was included in our meeting day as part of that program. Many of our employees have been CPR-certified in the past, but those who are not were encouraged to attend a class to be certified in these lifesaving measures.
"When our staff get together as a group, it is always a really great environment, states Anna Stroud, CEO of Paul Hall and Associates. She continues, "When we get to come together and also learn something to help benefit ourselves and others, we all walk away feeling even better about the day. Several staff members mentioned wanting a refresher on CPR training. It seemed like such a simple request, yet something so easy to provide. We are grateful for a local fire department that helped make this a reality."
